UPDATE TO HUNGER GAMES: BAH!

I feel like I need to update a previous post I did about the Hunger Games movie. I wrote my commentary before we saw the pictures, before the entire cast was announced, and before we saw the trailer.

Sigh. I'll admit, I am still not holding my breath for it to be Lord of the Rings amazing, but I am hoping it will be better than the Twilight series. It can't be all bad if Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, and Lenny Kravitz are in it, right? And my friend Laura has assured me that Jennifer Lawrence is a very gifted actress (and I believe everything that Laura tells me. She is much smarter than I am). So I guess I have to say that I am cautiously optimistic that it won't suck.

So there we go. It could be awesome but we'll just have to see.

Something for you to enjoy on a long weekend.

Sean and Lisa Ohlenkamp took over Type Books in Toronto to create this charming short. That's right it's damn charming. With a crew of over 20 people, the "Joy of Books" was born. Music composed by Grayson Matthews.

For your viewing pleasure:

I know many of you have seen this, but it makes me giggle each time I see it. I think it is a goofy fantastic example of censorship.

Dear Everyone: I apologize for being a slacker.

Greetings!
So I am aware that I have been neglecting my duties to share the library goings-on I've experienced in what I like to call "the off-season." It's summer vacation, right? Well, Anna so beautifully reminded me this weekend that a Wandering Librarian never rests! She's right, too. In reality, I've been reading "grown-up" books, which is a nice change from the sixth-grade-and-younger reading that usually consumes me (speaking of younger readers and being "consumed"...good lookin' at you, Gooney Bird Greene).

I'll be up and running at full-capacity tomorrow. In the meantime, the Old Spice Guy talks about libraries in a semi-genius social web ad campaign. Ah, to have the resources and cultural importance to pull something like that off...the possibilities...

The Vocation of a Librarian

I was watching this YouTube video, and had to consider how much have we changed in our career description? Do you like people? Do you like books? It sounds so simple, and is still generally applicable to our job. At the same time I want to scream "THAT'S NOT ALL WE DO!" at the computer monitor. We have come so far, and yet still have so much further to go. How do we communicate that with others that still think that we all use a card catalog, all female, shush others, and stamp books? Even our self-made products play into these stereotypes, hysterically yes, but still affirm the old-fashioned views that we are trying to get away from. Is this a losing battle?
